My One Word: Abandon
Abandon, not your usual word to help you focus on God and what he has for you this next year. Abandon usually means in Webster something like “Abandon Ship”, the leaving of something behind for something more secure. In short, leaving a place that is not very safe to go to another place of safety and or refuge.
As I see it, Abandon reminds me of two things. First, that God will never “Abandon” those that He calls not just to himself, but to do something bigger than they are and even something very specific. In Genesis 24, Abraham sent his servant on a journey his fathers house in Haran to find a wife for Isaac. This must have been a crazy idea for this servant and must have been dangerous. Let’s face’ it, this journey was not a long weekend trip, but one that was dangerous and time consuming. When Abraham’s servant arrived, he saw God’s work first hand and thank God for “not abandoning” his master Abraham.
Secondly, God’s word continually reminds me that I can “Abandon” my hearts into His hands. The Newsboy’s song “Abandon” is a great reminder of this. We are called to live life wholly before God, letting go (Abandoning) of all that I chase after and hope for and placing it all; all of my dreams and desires into His Hand. As i do this, this is when I can really start living life freely in God’s love and His world that knows no boarders.
I can only imaging what else God intends to show me this year by this one word.
